I have a cache of amazing 100 year old veneer that came from some long forgotten furniture manufacturer in Cincinnati. My boss at the time saw it listed in the classified ads. It sounded intriguing, so we went over to check it out.
The building was a huge old former brewery. There were a couple of young guys clearing out the building which they were going to convert into a restaurant. They led us to a dark cluttered room in the back, with piles of debris laying about and coal dust covering everything. We had to be careful, as there were floorboards missing in some places.
Back in the corner was this huge wooden crate full of all kinds of figured veneer. Flames, birdseye, you name it – some of the wood I could identify, others are still a mystery. The bundles were held with twine and marked in chalk with size and amount.
I bought as much as I could afford at the time, thinking I would use it to make some furniture or something. Fast forward 20 years – I’ve used some of it on guitar peg heads and such, but I still have the majority of it left, so I’ve decided to use it on pickups. Available while it lasts.
